Subject by Subject

Curriculum of the 200-Hour Course

A closer look at each subject you’ll study across the 200 hours — from asana and pranayama to philosophy, anatomy, Ayurveda and sound healing.

Rooted in classical texts like the Hatha Yoga Pradipika, Gheranda Samhita and Shiva Samhita — covering asanas, pranayama, mudras and bandhas for overall health and well-being.

  • Physical Postures (Asanas): Held longer to deepen stretch and refine alignment.
  • Balance & Harmony: “Ha” (sun) and “tha” (moon) — balancing effort and relaxation, activity and rest.
  • Gentle & Accessible: A slower pace suited to all levels, including complete beginners.
  • Holistic Approach: Encourages a balanced diet, ethical behaviour and mental discipline alongside the physical practice.

A dynamic, breath-synchronized practice popularised by Sri K. Pattabhi Jois, built on a fixed sequence (or “series”) of postures.

  • Vinyasa: Each movement linked to an inhalation or exhalation.
  • Six Series: Primary (Yoga Chikitsa), Intermediate (Nadi Shodhana) and Advanced A–D (Sthira Bhaga) — this course teaches the Primary Series.
  • Drishti: A fixed gaze point for each posture to sharpen focus.
  • Ujjayi Breath: Deep, audible breathing that builds internal heat and a steady rhythm.

Muscles, bones, fascia and joint movement, and how they apply from asana to asana — so you can practice and teach safely.

  • Organs & bodily systems
  • Nadis
  • Digestive, circulatory, respiratory & endocrine systems
  • Skeletal & muscular systems
  • Joint movement & muscle function
  • The science behind yogic cleansing

The spiritual foundation of yoga — the union of body, mind and spirit, and the path toward self-realization.

  • Eight Limbs of Yoga (Patanjali’s Yoga Sutras): Yama, Niyama, Asana, Pranayama, Pratyahara, Dharana, Dhyana, Samadhi
  • Karma Yoga — the path of selfless action
  • Bhakti Yoga — the path of devotion
  • Gyan Yoga — the path of knowledge
  • Raja Yoga — the path of meditation & mental discipline

Controlled breathing techniques to regulate prana (life force) — purifying the body, calming the mind, and preparing for deeper meditation.

  • Nadi Shodhana (Alternate Nostril Breathing)
  • Kapalbhati (Skull-Shining Breath)
  • Bhramari (Bee Breath)
  • Ujjayi (Ocean Breath)
  • Bhastrika (Bellows Breath)

Shatkarma — traditional purification techniques to cleanse the body and remove blockages before deeper practice.

  • Jal Neti: Nasal cleansing with lukewarm saline water via a neti pot — a traditional practice to clear the nasal passages before pranayama.
  • Rubber/Sutra Neti: A deeper nasal cleanse using a soft rubber thread (sutra), for more advanced practitioners.

Learn to build a meaningful personal meditation practice — and how to teach it to others.

Before You Arrive

Preparing for Your 200 Hour Yoga Teacher Training in Rishikesh

Why Train in Rishikesh?

Rishikesh sits in the foothills of the Himalayas on the banks of the Ganges, and has been a home for yoga and meditation for generations. Ashrams, temples and the evening Ganga Aarti are part of daily life here, which makes it a natural place to study yoga away from everyday distractions.

Training in Rishikesh also means learning close to the roots of the tradition, from experienced local teachers who live these practices every day.

How to Prepare

You don’t need an advanced practice to join. A regular routine of a few classes a week in the months before the course will help your body settle into the daily schedule more easily.

If you’d like to read ahead, start with “Asana, Pranayama, Mudra and Bandha”, the text recommended in our FAQ. Bring comfortable practice clothes, a notebook, a refillable water bottle and a few warm layers for cool mornings.

Check the visa requirements for your country early — our Visa & Safety guide explains the basics. We arrange airport pickup on your arrival date, so share your flight details with our team once they are confirmed.

Days begin early with pranayama at 6 am and close with evening meditation, with one day off each week to rest, explore the town or join a local excursion. Knowing this rhythm in advance makes the first few days much easier.

What Happens After You Graduate

When you complete the 200 hour yoga teacher training in Rishikesh, you receive a 200-hour certificate from our Yoga Alliance® Registered Yoga School (RYS 200). You can then create an account on the Yoga Alliance website and apply to register as an RYT-200 teacher.

Along the way, 30 hours of teaching methodology and practicum help you build the confidence to plan and lead a full class on your own before you leave Rishikesh.

A natural next step is to start teaching friends, local studios or online classes. You can also return to Rishikesh later for our 300-hour advanced training and work towards the 500-hour level.
